Preventing breast cancer recurrence, responsible for 90% of deaths, is Dr. Dalit Barkan’s focus. At the University of Haifa, her lab investigates dormant cancer cells that evade initial treatment and later “wake up,” causing deadly new tumors. This research is critical for aggressive triple-negative breast cancer (TNBC), which frequently relapses. Dr. Barkan’s team has made a significant breakthrough, identifying compounds that can block the signals activating these dormant cells, offering hope to stop recurrence. Her personal experience as a breast cancer survivor deeply motivates her dedication to finding new cancer treatment paradigms, believing a cure is achievable.
