The Carmel coastline, stretching from Haifa to Caesarea, holds an extraordinary 11,000-year record of human maritime history, including over a hundred shipwrecks, ancient harbors, and submerged settlements. Despite its immense significance, much of this underwater heritage is unexplored and faces severe threats from climate change, coastal development, and marine exploitation. Without immediate action, these irreplaceable sites, and a vital chapter of human history, could be lost forever.
To combat this, University of Haifa researchers are proposing an ambitious project. Led by the School of Archaeology and Maritime Cultures, Israel’s only institution specializing in maritime archaeology, the initiative will systematically document these sites using high-tech mapping and advanced artifact analysis. They will also assess preservation statuses and create public presentations to raise awareness, ensuring the safeguarding of these invaluable underwater treasures.
Your generous donation of $369,500 will enable our researchers to conduct this 3-year research project.
